East Africa has a multitude of wonderful beach properties. If you’re on safari in the Mara you might want to head to Lamu or Funzi keys, some people can’t resist the allure that the very name of Zanzibar conjures up and Tanzania has many other lovely beach properties on its mainland. However, with thirteen impossibly romantic timber villas strung loosely along one of the world’s most beautiful beaches, we’ve chosen to feature Vamizi Island.

The island’s near perfect white coral beaches and breathtakingly beautiful shallows are just the tip of the tropical iceberg. Just twelve kilometres long and one kilometre wide, fringed with gently-shelving beaches and calm waters, it is a haven for adults and children alike. The timber villas have been designed with the privacy of honeymooners and families in mind where you can truly relax and unwind from the stresses of everyday life.

The bar and restaurant are the focal point for island life and there is a tempting range of cocktails and a list of fine wines waiting to be explored. The pace of life slows here as you sink back into the acres of cushions and kick off your shoes while you wait for today’s catch to be prepared into a sumptuous array of dishes.

For adventure seekers Vamizi boasts some world-class diving and big game fishing. Beneath the surface of the turquoise sea is an outstanding reefscape, teeming with a bewildering amount of sea life, from whales, dolphins, turtles and reef sharks to gorgonian corals and giant clams. A sheer walled canyon, known as ‘Neptune’s Arm’, slips down to a kilometre below, meandering along the island’s eastern edge, providing dive sites beyond compare and coral habitats that have been deemed amongst the healthiest reef systems in the world.

The island is a sanctuary, small and intimate, offering the definitive barefoot luxury of your own private island. We think it makes for the perfect end to a safari and works particularly well if combined with Sands River in the Selous or if you have more time, the Serengeti.
