Think about the factors mentioned above - how long you want to go for, anything specific you want to see and how you would like to get about. Many people hire cars but there are coach and minibus tours. If you're just heading for one area such as Cape Town you could organise transport locally as you need it and for a real treat book on the Blue Train or Rovos Rail.
